Navy Bean Soup

Cover beans with water, bring to boil, then add all ingredients, simmer all day, check frequently for water coverage.  Cook with lid until last hour, remove lid and let thicken.

  • 2 lbs dry beans, sorted and soaked over night, discard water
  • 1/2 cup bacon grease
  • 1 TB garlic salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 medium onion, sauteed in butter
  • 2 TB fresh, chopped basil
  • 3 Bay leaves
